That reason is because it often suffered the damage of the flood. One more reason, it was revolution of transport in the Meiji period. But it is likely that the settlements on the Kitakami River had characteristic spatial structure, which was influenced by the river. It may be different from settlements of the mountain village and the general street village. This research examined the settlements on the river from point of view of spatial structure, through investigations of old picture maps. As that example, I focus attention on Oosumachi・Katamachi settlement in Hashiura Village which the samurai lived in, and it had a guard boat "Kodakamaru" and a lot of fishing boat at that time.
