As a result, population decline accelerated in the affected areas. Meanwhile, a phenomenon that garnered attention is “people moving to disaster-stricken areas,” which goes against the aforementioned trend. The life stories of these movers, who gained their impetus from disaster volunteer work and other reconstruction support activities, have become symbolic, and concrete examples have been actively shared by the mass media.\nFor this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two people who decided to move to Kesennuma City after visiting from other prefectures and municipalities after the Great East Japan Earthquake and participating in disaster volunteer activities. The interviews explored their life stories chronologically, starting from before their participation in disaster volunteer activities in Kesennuma City.\nThe interview findings indicated that both people decided to participate in disaster volunteer activities based on the vague assumption that “there are people in need of help.” This is a new element that is difficult to classify based on previous studies that examined motivations to participate in disaster volunteering;
