| 内容記述 | This paper reports on how people who experienced disaster volunteer activities after the Great East Japan Earthquake in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture and subsequently moved to Kesennuma City decided to make this move. During the recovery and reconstruction following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, there was an outflow of people from the affected areas due to the effects on the industries that provided their livelihoods, difficulties in securing a place to live due to depopulation in coastal areas, and temporary housing in many cases becoming permanent. As a result, population decline accelerated in the affected areas. Meanwhile, a phenomenon that garnered attention is “people moving to disaster-stricken areas,” which goes against the aforementioned trend. The life stories of these movers, who gained their impetus from disaster volunteer work and other reconstruction support activities, have become symbolic, and concrete examples have been actively shared by the mass media. For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two people who decided to move to Kesennuma City after visiting from other prefectures and municipalities after the Great East Japan Earthquake and participating in disaster volunteer activities. The interviews explored their life stories chronologically, starting from before their participation in disaster volunteer activities in Kesennuma City. The interview findings indicated that both people decided to participate in disaster volunteer activities based on the vague assumption that “there are people in need of help.” This is a new element that is difficult to classify based on previous studies that examined motivations to participate in disaster volunteering; however, even if the recipients are not clearly defined, it should be possible to frame this as an “altruistic motivation” in the sense of wanting to make a contribution to others. |
