| 内容記述 | This study examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Legend of Good Women (LGW), focusing on the narrator’s reliance on external figures—Alceste and Cleopatra—to construct poetic authority. The study highlights LGW’s narrative fragility and performative instability by examining Alceste and Cleopatra as prosthetic figures. Alceste, presented as both a muse and a symbolic authority, anchors legitimacy yet remains an unstable source of support. Her dual role as sacred figure and unreliable foundation underscores the precarious nature of poetic voice and narrative stability. Similarly, Cleopatra, reimagined as a “martyr of love,” simplifies her classical complexity, recasting her death as pseudo-martyrdom through hagiographic exaggeration. These manipulations illuminate the structural tensions arising from the narrator’s dependence on figures whose support is essential and unstable. The study contributes to broader discussions of Chaucer’s poetics of dependency and prosthetic supplementation, pointing toward the need to further examine the tension between the narrator’s dependency and emerging subjectivity as mediated through the representations of “Good Women” in the poem’s incomplete text. | |||||||||||
